Best Medical Device Companies to Work For in 2026: 8 Employers Compared

Best Medical Device Companies to Work For in 2026: 8 Employers Compared

How we put this together: we compare official feature and pricing pages, app store listings, privacy policies and public user reviews. Prices change, so check the provider's site before you pay.

Key takeaways

  • Stryker has the strongest verified record on this list: No. 55 on Fortune's 2026 100 Best Companies to Work For and No. 1 on Fortune's 2026 Best Large Workplaces in Manufacturing and Production.
  • Three more employers on the Fortune manufacturing list are medical technology firms: GE HealthCare (No. 13), Alcon (No. 14) and Arthrex (No. 23).
  • Forbes and Statista's 2026 America's Best Large Employers list, as reported by trade press, ranks Boston Scientific No. 19, Medtronic No. 197 and Intuitive No. 235 out of 700 organizations.
  • Size varies a lot: from roughly 17,000 people at Intuitive to 122,000 at Abbott, which makes Abbott a broad healthcare employer and not a pure device maker.
  • Rankings are employee surveys, not guarantees. Culture and pay differ by team, so judge the specific job posting and manager, not only the company badge.

The best medical device companies to work for

These are companies, not apps, so the price fields below say "Not applicable". We ordered the list by how much independent employer recognition we could verify for 2026, starting with the strongest. None of this is a promise about any single job, and we do not publish salary figures because we could not verify them from official pages.

#1

Stryker

Best for: Orthopaedic, surgical and manufacturing careers

Stryker website

Stryker is the clearest standout. Great Place To Work's profile lists it at No. 55 on Fortune's 2026 100 Best Companies to Work For, and at No. 1 in the Manufacturing and Production (Large) category for 2026. The same profile shows it on the 100 Best list in earlier years too, at No. 54 in 2025 and No. 82 in 2024, so the 2026 result is not a one-year blip.

Stryker's own About page lists about 56,000 employees in 61 countries (approximate, as of December 31, 2025) and gives the mission as making healthcare better together with customers. The company is best known for orthopaedic implants and surgical equipment, which means a lot of the work sits in manufacturing, engineering, sales and clinical support.

The honest catch is size. A company with tens of thousands of employees can feel different from one division to the next, and the company-wide ranking says little about the team you would join. The careers pages we reached did not spell out benefits, so ask for details during the interview process.

What we like
  • No. 55 on Fortune's 2026 100 Best Companies to Work For
  • No. 1 on Fortune's 2026 Best Large Workplaces in Manufacturing and Production
  • About 56,000 employees in 61 countries
Watch out for
  • Careers pages we reached did not detail benefits
  • Large company, so experience varies by division
#2

Boston Scientific

Best for: Cardiology, endoscopy and urology device careers

Visit bostonscientific.com

Boston Scientific website

Boston Scientific shows up high on the Forbes and Statista list of America's Best Large Employers 2026. Trade coverage places it at No. 19, the highest of any medical technology company in that coverage's list of 15. Forbes says the 11th annual list was released in February 2026 and recognizes the 700 organizations with the highest scores, based on a survey of more than 217,000 US employees.

The company's About page lists 59,000 employees worldwide (2025 data) and commercial representation in 127 countries. Its careers page points to a talent network, a students and early careers section, and a page of awards, although the page text we reached did not name specific awards.

If you are an engineer or clinician looking for a large employer with a recognized ranking, this is a solid name to put near the top of your list. The limit is that its ranking comes from a single survey list. We could not verify a Fortune list placement for it in 2026, so treat the Forbes result as one data point rather than the whole story.

What we like
  • Ranked No. 19 on Forbes and Statista's 2026 America's Best Large Employers list (per trade press)
  • About 59,000 employees
  • Commercial presence in 127 countries
Watch out for
  • Careers page is light on benefit detail
  • Forbes ranking is based on a different survey method than Fortune's
#3

Medtronic

Best for: Wide range of device lines and large-company career paths

Visit medtronic.com

Medtronic website

Medtronic is the biggest pure-play device name here. Its fiscal 2026 annual report says it has over 95,000 full-time employees, with 43 percent based in the US or Puerto Rico. Its careers pages list Early Careers, Engineer Your Career, Inclusion and Diversity, Culture and Awards sections, and a link to a page about being honored for culture and management.

On the Forbes and Statista list as reported by trade press, Medtronic ranks No. 197, which puts it among the 700 recognized employers but well behind the top group. That is a fair snapshot: a respected, very large company with a long history, not a standout in workplace surveys.

Medtronic suits people who want variety. Its device lines cover many specialties, so internal moves between divisions are a realistic path at a company this size. The operational headquarters is at 710 Medtronic Parkway in Minneapolis, which is worth checking against your location preferences.

What we like
  • Over 95,000 full-time employees
  • Early Careers and Engineer Your Career programs
  • Ranked No. 197 on Forbes and Statista's 2026 list (per trade press)
Watch out for
  • Mid-table in the Forbes ranking
  • Operational headquarters in Minneapolis may matter for location
#4

Intuitive

Best for: Robotic surgery engineering and clinical support

Visit intuitive.com

Intuitive website

Intuitive makes the da Vinci surgical system. Its careers site says the company has more than 17,000 people, and reports 12,000+ da Vinci systems worldwide, 20M+ procedures performed since inception and systems in 72 countries. These are the company's own figures, which we could not independently verify.

The careers page lists offices in the Americas (including Sunnyvale, California; Peachtree Corners, Georgia; Chapel Hill, North Carolina; and Orange, Connecticut), EMEA and Asia Pacific. At the time we checked, it showed 475 open roles in the Americas, 86 in EMEA and 113 in Asia Pacific. The page also has an Awards and Recognition section, but did not name specific awards in the text we saw.

On the Forbes and Statista list, trade press places Intuitive at No. 235. If your interest is robotics, software and clinical training, few device employers match its focus. If you want a broad portfolio of product lines, a larger multi-division company may offer more room to move.

What we like
  • More than 17,000 employees
  • Over 12,000 da Vinci systems worldwide
  • Ranked No. 235 on Forbes and Statista's 2026 list (per trade press)
Watch out for
  • Smaller than the biggest competitors
  • Openings concentrate in a few hubs
#5

Abbott

Best for: Diagnostics and medical devices under one roof

Visit abbott.com
Starting priceNot applicable

Abbott website

Abbott is on this list with a caveat: it is a diversified healthcare company, so medical devices are only one part of what it does. Its careers page says it employs 122,000 people worldwide, including more than 41,000 in the US, and says it invested $4.8 billion in US employee and retirement benefits over the past five years.

Trade press has Abbott at No. 530 on the 2026 Forbes and Statista list, which is the lowest rank among the companies here, though still within the 700 organizations the list recognizes. Abbott also reports other recognitions on its own channels, but we could not verify those from primary sources, so we left them out.

For job seekers, the takeaway is practical. Look at the specific business unit in the posting, because a device engineering role and a nutrition or pharma role are very different jobs under one employer name. Abbott's scale does mean there are many entry points.

What we like
  • 122,000 employees worldwide, more than 41,000 in the US
  • $4.8 billion invested in US employee and retirement benefits over five years
  • Very large range of roles
Watch out for
  • Not a pure device company, so check the division
  • Ranked No. 530 on Forbes and Statista's 2026 list (per trade press)
#6

GE HealthCare

Best for: Imaging and ultrasound technology careers

Visit gehealthcare.com

GE HealthCare website

GE HealthCare makes medical imaging and related technology, and it appears at No. 13 on Fortune's Best Large Workplaces in Manufacturing and Production for 2026. That ranking is based on survey feedback representing more than 106,000 US employees across all listed companies, analyzed by Great Place To Work.

Its careers site says the company has offices in 80 countries, and its Culture and Benefits section says it centers colleague wellbeing, though it does not list specific benefits. The site separates early-career opportunities for students and graduates from roles for experienced hires, and it includes colleague stories.

This is a good fit for engineers and technologists who want to work on imaging hardware and software. The catch is that the ranking covers the manufacturing category, so it says less about corporate or commercial roles. Read the posting closely and ask the recruiter which site the job is based at.

What we like
  • No. 13 on Fortune's 2026 Best Large Workplaces in Manufacturing and Production
  • Offices in 80 countries
  • Early-career and professional pathways
Watch out for
  • Careers page lists no specific benefits
  • Imaging focus is narrower than some rivals
#7

Alcon

Best for: Eye care devices and early-career rotational programs

Visit alcon.com
Starting priceNot applicable
Free planNot applicable
Alcon website

Alcon focuses on eye care, from surgical products to vision care. Its careers page says it has 25,000+ associates, works directly in 56 countries, serves patients in more than 140 countries and runs 17 manufacturing sites. It also lists Fortune's Best Workplaces in Manufacturing and Production 2026 among its awards, which matches Fortune's own ranking of No. 14.

The company highlights Early Careers and Rotational Programs, a Digital at Alcon group and a research and development organization. Other recognitions it lists include Forbes Great Companies for Women 2025 and Vault Top Ranked Internships. These are company-reported, so verify any that matter to you.

Alcon is a strong choice if you already know you want to work in ophthalmology or eye care. If you want to work across many specialties, a broader employer such as Medtronic or Abbott may offer more internal mobility.

What we like
  • No. 14 on Fortune's 2026 Best Large Workplaces in Manufacturing and Production
  • Early Careers and Rotational Programs
  • 17 manufacturing sites
Watch out for
  • Narrow focus on eye care
  • Benefits are on a separate page we could not review
#8

Arthrex

Best for: Orthopaedic engineering and hands-on manufacturing roles

Visit arthrex.com
Starting priceNot applicable

Arthrex website

Arthrex is a privately held orthopaedics company, and Fortune ranks it No. 23 on its 2026 list of Best Large Workplaces in Manufacturing and Production. Its careers site is organized by region (North America, Latin America, Europe, Middle East and Africa, and Asia Pacific) and lists Engineering and Manufacturing as job categories.

The company says it is committed to making employees' lives better through professional growth and learning opportunities, and the site mentions career paths for students and recent graduates. It did not publish a headcount or specific recognitions on the careers page we reviewed, which is why Fortune's ranking is the main evidence here.

That thinner public record is the honest downside. You will need to do more homework, such as talking to current employees and reading the posted job requirements. For people who like making and testing products directly, though, Arthrex's ranking in a manufacturing-focused list is a good sign.

What we like
  • No. 23 on Fortune's 2026 Best Large Workplaces in Manufacturing and Production
  • Engineering and manufacturing job categories
  • Learning and professional growth focus
Watch out for
  • Careers page lists no headcount or recognitions
  • Smaller public information footprint

How we picked these

We started with major US-active medical device and medical technology employers and kept the ones where we could verify a 2026 employer recognition. For each company we read the official About or careers page, then checked the recognition on Great Place To Work and Fortune pages, or on trade-press coverage of the Forbes and Statista list when the primary list was not readable.

We did not use salary figures, because we could not confirm them from official sources, and we did not claim hands-on experience of working at any of these employers. Edwards Lifesciences (more than 16,000 employees, per its careers page) and Dexcom (No. 408 on the Forbes and Statista list, per trade press) were considered but did not make the final eight. We could not verify enough 2026 recognition for Edwards, and Dexcom ranks lower on the one list we could confirm.

How to choose a medical device employer

A company badge is a starting point. These steps help you compare actual jobs.

Match the role to the ranking

Fortune's manufacturing list covers companies in the manufacturing and production category, so it speaks most directly to engineering, technician and plant roles. The Forbes list surveys employees across a whole company. If you are applying for sales, clinical or corporate roles, read the survey scope before treating a rank as proof.

Read the posting, not just the brand

Many states require pay ranges in job postings, so compare listed ranges across employers instead of relying on general salary claims. Look at travel, on-call and relocation expectations, which vary a lot between field-based roles and lab or plant roles.

Check regulated-industry basics

Device roles often involve quality systems and regulatory standards. Experience with FDA quality system requirements, ISO 13485 or design controls can help your application. If you are changing fields, ask about training and mentors for these topics.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best medical device companies to work for?

Based on 2026 recognitions we could verify, Stryker leads, with a No. 55 place on Fortune's 100 Best Companies to Work For and No. 1 on its manufacturing list. GE HealthCare, Alcon and Arthrex also ranked on Fortune's manufacturing list, and Boston Scientific ranked No. 19 on the Forbes and Statista list.

Which medical devices companies are best to work for in engineering?

Stryker, GE HealthCare, Alcon and Arthrex all rank on Fortune's manufacturing and production list, which is where many engineering roles sit. Intuitive is a strong fit for robotics and software work, and Medtronic offers a very wide range of device lines.

Are medical device companies good places for new graduates?

Several publish early-career paths. Medtronic lists Early Careers and Engineer Your Career, Alcon lists Early Careers and Rotational Programs, and Edwards Lifesciences lists university and graduate programs in several countries. Check each program's dates and eligibility on its own page.

Do these rankings guarantee a good job?

No. Rankings come from employee surveys at a point in time, and they average many teams. A manager, location and role can matter more than the company badge, so ask about team culture and turnover during interviews.

How big are these companies?

They range from about 17,000 employees at Intuitive to 122,000 at Abbott. Medtronic reports over 95,000 full-time employees, Boston Scientific 59,000 and Stryker about 56,000, and Alcon reports 25,000+ associates.
