How we put this together: we compare official feature and pricing pages, app store listings, privacy policies and public user reviews. Prices change, so check the provider's site before you pay.

Key takeaways

  • There is no single best insurance company for everyone. J.D. Power's 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study names a different top insurer in each of its 11 regions, including Erie in three of them.
  • Nobody on this list publishes a standard price. Premiums come from a personal quote, so every starting price below reads "See website".
  • Safe-driving apps can cut your bill. USAA says SafePilot can take up to 15% off at enrollment and up to 30% at renewal, State Farm says Drive Safe & Save can reach up to 30%, and Nationwide's SmartRide gives an instant 10% on enrolling.
  • USAA is limited to military members, veterans and their families. Erie sells through local agents and does not cover every state, so confirm availability before you spend time on a quote.
  • Only 58% of customers say they fully understand their auto policy, according to J.D. Power. Read your coverage limits and deductibles, not just the price.

The best insurance companies for car coverage

Most people searching for the best insurance company want car insurance, so that is the focus here. Each company below has its own strengths, and the right one depends on where you live, how you drive and whether you want an agent or an app. We list them in no particular order of quality. This is general information, not insurance or financial advice. Rates and eligibility depend on your state, vehicle and driving record, so get a quote before you decide.

State Farm is the pick for people who like having a person to call. Its auto page says it has more than 19,000 auto insurance agents across the US, and you can find one by ZIP code. You can also start a quote online with your ZIP code.

Its main savings tools are Drive Safe & Save, which it says can reach up to 30% for safe driving (rules vary by state), and Steer Clear, which can save drivers under 25 up to 20% if they have no at-fault accidents or moving violations in the past three years. State Farm also says bundling auto with renters insurance could save up to $900.

Its page quotes a 2025 company survey saying drivers who switch save an average of $740 per year. That is State Farm's own figure and your result will differ. In the J.D. Power 2026 study, State Farm ranked highest in the Northwest region.

Strengths
  • Large agent network
  • Drive Safe & Save and Steer Clear discounts
  • Bundling with renters, home or life policies
Weaknesses
  • Drive Safe & Save is not available in California, Massachusetts or Rhode Island
  • Price depends entirely on your quote

Progressive website
progressive.com homepage

Progressive suits shoppers who want to do most of the work online. Its auto page says a quote can take as little as four minutes, and its Name Your Price tool lets you enter a budget and see which coverages fit it. In select states and situations, AutoQuote Explorer shows Progressive's rate next to other insurers' rates.

Snapshot is its usage-based program, which adjusts your rate based on your driving. Progressive says customers who save with Snapshot average $328 per year, and notes it is not available in California or through every agent. The company also says customers average about seven discounts, including bundling, good student and teen driver discounts (teen discounts are not available in California).

Coverage options include liability, comprehensive, collision, roadside assistance, uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage, a Vehicle Protection Plan and loan or lease payoff coverage. Claims and policy help run 24 hours a day by phone, online, in the app or through chat.

Strengths
  • Name Your Price tool builds a policy around a budget
  • AutoQuote Explorer compares other insurers' rates in select states
  • 24/7 claims and policy help
Weaknesses
  • Snapshot is not available in California
  • Cheapest option can mean thinner coverage
03GEICO logo

GEICO

Who it suits: Direct online quotes

GEICO website
geico.com homepage

GEICO is one of the best-known direct insurers. Its auto insurance page promises a personalized quote in minutes and a ZIP code box to start. It also offers a car insurance coverage calculator and state-by-state requirement information to read before you get a quote, which is useful if you are not sure how much liability coverage you need.

GEICO says drivers who switch can save over $900 a year. The page does not say how that number was calculated, so treat it as marketing and compare with a real quote. It also mentions bundling home and auto policies without listing the details.

The honest drawback is that the main page tells you little about specific programs. We could not confirm a driving-habits program or detailed discount list from that page, so go through the quote and ask what discounts apply to you.

Strengths
  • Quote in minutes online
  • Coverage calculator and state requirement guides
  • Bundling for home and auto
Weaknesses
  • Little detail on its main auto page
  • Savings claim is not explained
04USAA logo

USAA

Who it suits: Military families

Go to USAA

USAA is built for the military community. Its auto page says eligibility covers active-duty military, National Guard and Reservists, veterans who have honorably served, contracted ROTC cadets and midshipmen, officer and warrant officer candidates, service academy appointees, and spouses and children of USAA members. If you do not fit those groups, you cannot buy from it.

Two optional driving programs are offered at quote time. USAA SafePilot says you can get up to 15% off when you enroll and earn up to 30% off at renewal in select locations. SafePilot Miles targets low-mileage drivers with savings of up to 20% for fewer miles and an earned driving discount of up to 20%. Both need a mobile driving app.

Other savings include up to 10% for bundling auto and property policies and up to 15% off if you garage your car on a military base. USAA says its members saved an average of $960 per year in a survey when they switched. As with other insurers, that is its own number.

Strengths
  • SafePilot up to 15% off on enrolling
  • Military on-base discount of up to 15%
  • Mobile app for claims, ID cards and roadside help
Weaknesses
  • Membership restricted to the military community
  • Safe-driving programs require a mobile app
05Erie Insurance logo

Erie Insurance

Who it suits: Rate protection and agent service

Erie stands out in customer satisfaction. In the J.D. Power 2026 study it ranked highest in the Mid-Atlantic, North Central and Southeast regions. It sells through local agents, and its page says it has more than 14,500 of them.

Its Rate Lock feature means your rate only changes if you add or remove a vehicle or driver or change where the car is kept. Erie also says it offers first accident forgiveness (no surcharge the first time you are at fault, after three years as a customer), and a diminishing deductible that drops by $100 for each consecutive claims-free year.

Smaller extras include pet injury coverage (up to $500 per pet, $1,000 total), locksmith costs up to $75 and personal item coverage up to $350. Its multi-policy discount ranges from 15% to 25% by state. Erie says some benefits are not offered in every state, so read the policy details.

Strengths
  • Rate Lock limits premium changes
  • First accident forgiveness after three years
  • Top J.D. Power result in three regions
Weaknesses
  • Sold through agents and not in every state
  • Some features vary by state

Nationwide

Who it suits: Usage-based discounts

Go to Nationwide

Free optionFree quote

Nationwide is a good fit for drivers who want pricing tied to how they actually drive. It topped the usage-based insurance category in J.D. Power's 2026 study with a score of 711, for a third year in a row. That category covers insurers' telematics programs specifically, not the whole company.

SmartRide gives an instant 10% discount when you enroll. The final discount depends on your driving and could be zero, and it applies at renewal, so do not assume the 10% is permanent. SmartMiles charges a base premium plus a monthly amount based on the miles and days you drive, which can suit low-mileage drivers.

Nationwide's On Your Side promise includes a written guarantee on repairs at participating Auto Repair Network shops and an annual review with your insurance professional. Its site lists bundling home and auto as its main discount, with other options like safe driver and paperless billing discounts.

Strengths
  • SmartRide gives an instant 10% discount on enrolling
  • SmartMiles pricing based on miles driven
  • Written repair guarantee at participating shops
Weaknesses
  • SmartRide discount can end up at zero at renewal
  • Accident forgiveness is not in all states
07Travelers logo

Travelers

Who it suits: Independent-agent shoppers

Go to Travelers

Free optionFree quote

Travelers sells through independent agents, which means a local agent can often compare it against other carriers for you. You can also start an online quote or call. Its car insurance page says it does not give quotes for risks in Alaska, Florida, Hawaii or Louisiana.

Discounts listed include a safe driver discount for households with no accident, violation or major comprehensive claim in three to five years (not available in California or New York), a multi-policy discount for bundling with home, condo or renters coverage, and a good student discount for drivers who keep a B average or better.

Coverage options include liability, collision, comprehensive, loan or lease gap and extended transportation expenses. Claims can be reported 24/7 online and tracked in a MyTravelers account. In the J.D. Power 2026 study, Travelers ranked highest in New York with a score of 657.

Strengths
  • Sold through independent agents
  • Safe driver, multi-policy and good student discounts
  • Claims can be filed and tracked online 24/7
Weaknesses
  • No quotes available for risks in Alaska, Florida, Hawaii or Louisiana
  • Safe driver discount is not offered in California or New York
08Liberty Mutual logo

Liberty Mutual

Who it suits: Optional coverage add-ons

Liberty Mutual leans on customization. Its auto page lists Better Car Replacement (a car one model year newer if yours is totaled), Accident Forgiveness, a Deductible Fund that you can use toward a future deductible, and standard coverages like comprehensive, collision, bodily injury liability and 24-hour roadside assistance.

It says drivers who switch could save over $700, and that bundling auto and home could save over $950. Those are company claims, and conditions apply. Discounts include violation-free, multi-car and the RightTrack safe-driving program.

The page also cites an A (Excellent) financial strength rating from A.M. Best, which matters because it tells you how likely the company is to pay claims. It offers online quotes and local agents. As with every insurer, compare the same coverage limits and deductibles across quotes, not just the lowest number.

Strengths
  • Better Car Replacement and Accident Forgiveness add-ons
  • RightTrack safe-driving program
  • A.M. Best financial strength rating of A (Excellent)
Weaknesses
  • Add-ons raise the price
  • Savings figures come from the company itself

How we picked these

We read each insurer's own auto insurance page, its published discount rules and driving program terms, and J.D. Power's 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study press release. We included well-known national and regional companies that sell personal car insurance in the US, and left out smaller carriers whose pages we could not load. We did not run quotes, test claims service or speak to customers, so this list shows what each company says and how J.D. Power ranked it, not our own experience.

Several large insurers, including Allstate, Amica, Farmers and American Family, blocked our access or were down for maintenance when we checked, so we did not write them up. Amica was the top insurer in J.D. Power's New England region for a third straight year, which is worth knowing if you live there.

How to choose an insurer

Compare the same coverage

A cheap quote can hide low liability limits or a huge deductible. Ask each company for the same limits and deductibles so the prices are comparable. Remember that "full coverage" is not a formal product; USAA's page explains that lenders usually mean your state's minimum liability plus comprehensive and collision.

Check regional rankings

J.D. Power's study covers 11 regions plus a separate usage-based category, so the winner depends on where you live. Look up your region, then check whether the top-ranked insurer actually sells in your state.

Think about telematics honestly

Programs from Progressive, USAA, State Farm and Nationwide reward safe driving, but they track your driving through an app or device. Check how the discount is calculated, whether it can go away at renewal and what happens if your driving score is poor.

Look at agents versus apps

Agent-based insurers like State Farm, Erie and Travelers can help you with claims and complex situations. Direct insurers like GEICO and Progressive tend to focus on online and app service. Pick the style you will actually use.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best insurance company for car insurance?

It varies by region. In J.D. Power's 2026 study, Erie ranked highest in the Mid-Atlantic, North Central and Southeast, State Farm in the Northwest, Travelers in New York and Amica in New England. Get quotes from at least three companies for your own ZIP code.

Which car insurance company is the cheapest?

No company is cheapest for everyone, because price depends on your age, location, vehicle, driving record and coverage. Insurers publish savings claims, such as State Farm's $740 and USAA's $960 average from their own surveys, but these are not guarantees. Compare quotes.

Is it worth using a usage-based program?

It can be if you drive safely or drive few miles. Nationwide's SmartRide discount can be zero at renewal, and USAA, State Farm and Progressive programs vary by state. Read the terms first.

Can anyone join USAA?

No. USAA lists eligibility for active-duty military, National Guard and Reservists, honorably serving veterans, certain ROTC cadets, candidates and appointees, and spouses and children of USAA members.

How many quotes should I get?

Three to five is a reasonable range. Use the same coverage limits and deductibles every time, and include at least one agent-based and one direct insurer.

Does a good customer satisfaction score mean good claims service?

Not exactly. J.D. Power's study measures overall satisfaction across seven dimensions, including trust, price, people and problem resolution. Use it as one signal alongside financial strength ratings and your own research.
